So do i have to feed my fish live fish? Well as some and most of you are aware, maybe by making a mistake, but we all know some fish are predators and some fish just will not tolerate tank mates(mainly being piranhas, with some exceptions). So how do i keep these species together, well fed, but not feeding on each other.
Predators in the wild have option to eat at will (providing there is food, and they can catch it), but does this mean i have to continue feeding live prey? Absolutly not, alot of predatory fish keepers are against feeding live fish, and or small mammals.(Sounds horrible, but it is done.) There are many alternatives to feeding your fish live food and maintaining that healthy well balanced diet.
Here is a list that may help you choose a good diet for your fish.
Freeze dried shrimp or frozen shrimp (mysis, brine, krill) ,raw/frozen beefheart, silversides, bloodworms, fresh from the grocery store fish, shrimp or other sea foods(sword fish, any white fish, scallops, etc ).
Some owners have been successful feeding there fish on flakes, pellets and other packaged food, from your local fish/aquarium store.
Now for all you die hard action, frenzy,or just that fast chase em down and gulp em catch!
Whats safe for my fish? Feeders?? Ironic as it feeders are not the healthiest fish, and most owners will steer away from them, unless they raise them, themselves or treat them before feeding them) and go for the tetra section,or fancy goldfish. The way these "feeder" fish are shipped by the thousands, literally. they are at a very high risk of disease or illness. Some piranha and other really aggressive fish owners have been known to throw small rodents, large catfish, bass, trout and other native fish in thier tanks. Doing this, always should quarenteen(medicate/treat for illness) prior to feeding them to your fish.
Hope this thread helps out,not all agressive fish have to be fed live prey, prospective owners should not be misconstrued.
