Hi everyone I was invited on this forum by metal maniac.

I wanted to get some more perspective on what I'm thinking of doing with my piraya.

I've had it for about 3 weeks now and it's eating market prawn stuffed with pellets. However, it mostly spends its time in hiding. I'm wanting it to come out more or be less skittish. I'm thinking of buying a red belly that it used to cohab with before I purchased it. My thinking is that since they cohabitated before they would be okay together. I'd hate to see them kill each other. Yet, I've seen video and heard of reds and pirayas cohabitating. My piraya is about 5" and the red is about 4."

They would be in a forty breeder and eventually would be moved to a 120g.

Should I lean on the side of caution and just keep the piraya solo while at the same time be patient and let it settle in more.

    or

Should I get the red belly? (I've got it on hold at the LFS)

Welcome to APU! I think 2 may be quarrelsome,..better to
go 1, 3 or more,..ya know. Nothing written in stone, but
they tend to focus less on eachother when there's more
then 2. If a 120g is in the near future, you could do a
mixed shoal then,..would hate to see a $$ Piraya killed
by a rbp! May not be the case, but are you willing to risk it?

I have too say i agree with Cam!

I would hate too see that Piraya done any damage but in the future a nice mixed shoal of the 2 species of Pygo's would be sweet!!! Should I add a red belly to my piraya's tank? 315146

Metal, and Cam know more than I do tongue , though I do agree 100% with them. I would wait till you get your 120 gallon and then get a mixed shoal. Although I've seen some cohabs that are rare. I've learned from experience myself, too have hiding spots and lots of them.

    Hi MM,

My piraya is doing just fine in the 40 breeder by itself. It's settled in quite well now.

    thanks for asking.
