    DIY 3D Background 12070810
drew a "basic" outline *note that I used a towel to keep the styrofoam pieces off my carpet. BAD idea lol! I ended up throwing the towel away because I couldn't get all the styrofoam off of it. From that point on I used painters plastic which works wonderfully.
    DIY 3D Background 12080810
carved it out with a large serated kitchen knife and a small pocket knife.
    DIY 3D Background 12090810
after a few layers of concrete. I don't have any pics of this piece alone with the color added but you can see it in the pic of when I was making sure everything still fit in the tank properly.
    DIY 3D Background 12170810
part of the rock cave that will hide one of the filter intakes, right after carving. it has some concrete on it in the next pic.
    DIY 3D Background 01040910
making sure everything fits still. check out that bad@$$ piece of driftwood on the left DIY 3D Background 63052
it's mopani wood and it weighs like 20 lbs lol!
    DIY 3D Background 01210910
part of the top where the "muddy river bank" is. I used spray foam to make the "mud" and it does not like concrete on it. It took twice as many layers on the spray foam than on the regular styrofoam.
    DIY 3D Background 01210911
building up the concrete on the "mud" with some river rock siliconed in.
    DIY 3D Background Img_0210
just took this pic a few minutes ago for you guys, it's still not complete but pretty d*mn close. sorry for the gap in the progress but I couldn't find my other pics. The unfinished rock in the top left will hide a powerhead and both filter outtakes. It's not attached to the bg, it will hang on the back of the tank in that spot so I can take it out and clean/maintain that area when needed.
    DIY 3D Background Img_0212
side view of the powerhead/filter outtake hideout.
    DIY 3D Background Img_0211
the other half. The top right is an overflow for the 2nd filter.
    DIY 3D Background Img_0213
top view of the overflow and opening of the cave where the other filter intake and a heater will be.

I'll post some more pics when I finish the concrete and put the rest of the river rock in. And then when I seal it.

*I sized all my pics down to 640 and it looks fine on the preview but on the post they are cut off. I don't know why uploading pics is so hard for me scratch

With the work I've put into it and with what more I have to do it will be about 20 hrs of work. Thats not including the drying time between layers of concrete.

update: the sealing process took longer than I expected, so I'de say about 22 hrs of work not including drying time.

    Thanks man.
After looking over the list I realized that I forgot a few small things.
sharpie marker or something similar to draw the outline
plastic container to mix concrete and concrete coloring
a metal file to smooth concrete on the edges so all 4 pieces fit together tightly.

I've probably spent around $100 so far on it. But I already had a lot of foam and some was given to me. Either way the foam is one of the least expensive materials. What size tanks do you want to make them for?

I would estimate it to be between $100 and $150 for materials for all 3 tanks (depending on how intricate and detailed you want them.) Also keep in mind that the money I spent got me enough materials to do another one of the same size. For example, the concrete I used only comes in one size, a 20lb bucket, and I've only used about half of it.
