Cam..Question about the goldfish.I do not feed my guys goldfish at all as we all know.Do you know of any official research. My boss and I were discussing it and she thought she remembered in vet school that thiaminase is only present when the fish had been frozen. But she couldn't find it in any of her books(she has been practicing for 10 yrs) and she doesn't see fish.I told her I would ask.She is big on research...and likes proof.

Re: Thiaminase in Goldfish,..
Pretty good explanation can be read here,..
http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Thiaminase
A quote,..
"It widely rumored that frozen fish is prone to contain more thiaminase than fish that has not been frozen. But why would this be so? Is it because
thiaminase-containing fish are amongst species offered frozen, or because thiaminase is formed when some fish are frozen &/or thawed? It makes
no sense to me that something as complex as an enzyme would ‘accidentally happen’ (be made) when fish is frozen & thawed. However, if thiaminase
were contained in the fishes’ cells, when those cells ruptured this might release thiaminase, making it easier to measure. I would expect digestion to
rupture all the cells in a prey item, anyway." by Richard Lunsford
I havent read anything to be fact on Goldfish Thiaminase levels found after frozen or
found alive aside from Goldfish are one of many on the list containing Thiaminase and
over a period of time if fed regularly will breakdown Thiamine (Vitamin B1),..they
also have a heavy fat content and offer little to no nutritional value,..your friend
asks a good question, unfortunately it's one "to my knowledge" not proven as fact,..
for me though,..the risks outweigh the rewards so i will steer clear of using Goldfish for feeders,..
