Post by burgh Fri 04 Sep 2009, 20:42

Well, I think I am going to set up or finish my 20H Nano build.
Not sure of just how I am going to set everything up yet though.

    For now:
    1 - 175 watt 14k MH
    20H Tank
1 - Maxi-jet 400 -- not sure what else yet for water movement
15-20lbs of baserock mixed with liverock
20lbs of sand - leaning toward black right now
debating if I want to run a close-loop on this one or not

No skimmer and probably no sump. --- (Not needed on a Nano) some will debate this thou.

Well thats it for now, I wil post pic's when I get underway..

your setup should be fine with what you have listed but ditch the maxi they do too much of a straight line of water movement get one of the magnet ones that stick to glass and give a more even out wave action.

Well, here's the first update. I changed by build yet once again. I and going to run a sump and skimmer now.

I really didn't want to type it all a second time so here's the link for my sump. Its posted in the DIY section.

    https://aggressive-predators.forumotion.com/diy-f46/quick-guide-on-how-to-build-a-sump-t641.htm#3796

Cam I think I am going to go fro a full blow nano reef. I know for sure I will be getting a clam, SPS, and LPS corals with a few fish.

Pboost, yea I know where your coming from. For now I am going to use the Maxi's since I have a few sitting around. I am going to either add a wave system or get two Hydor Koralia pumps later down the road. I am going to set this tank up with all the stuff I already have. Plus the mag drive 7 should add a nice water movement also. :)

Here's a pic of my mod light hood. I cut my 4' Hamilton MH hood in half.
I am going to install the new Mogul sock and reflector in it after I paint it. Than put the ends back on with cooling fans. I think in my 1st post I said I was going to run a 150w light, buts its a 175 watt 14k MH. (I changed the post) :)
I have to go and get a replacement piece of glass also to keep anything from splashing on the bulb and make a hanging system.
    Sorry pic isn't the greatest.

    Here's a little update:

Light hood - removed all the old paint and repainted. Reflector installed, cooling fans on both ends and got a new piece of glass cut to the new size.
Also, removed the second MH ballast and VHO ballast out of the power box and rewired everything.

Durso pipe built, overflow box built and installed into tank. Waiting for float switch for my DIY auto top off and the flow accelerator to arrive.

Macro rock I order came in friday and will start working on my rock formation monday and finish sump.

Little bit. :) I am very close to filling it up. I am going to meet a fellow reefer to grab some LR and L sand to seed my dried LR in the morning. Than I have to replace all my filters in my RO and hook up my TDS up and start making Ro water and salt mix. I should have my skimmer back wed night, so by Thur morning I should be finished and my tank underway.

Helped out alot since I had 5 other saltwater setups in the past and most of my stuff I still have.

Well after two weeks I got my nano 90% complete. I need to get another bag of sand, pump for the auto top off, and hookup the flow accelerator when ever it arrives.

    Here it is: Enjoy !!

    Thanks !!

It's hard to say how long the cycle will be. I have had some that cycled in 2 weeks and others that took up to a month. To play it safe 4 weeks. I have to get more sand to add to it so my cycle will take a little long since I didn't add it when I set it up. But, no rush now its up and runnig.

Here's the first additions to the new tank. Can't really have a saltwater setup without a pair of nemo's. My little girl wanted them for here B-Day.

I made a feel changes to my system since the last update.
I added a Remote Deep Sandbed --- 6 gallon bucket with 50lbs of sand.
    Fluidized sand bed filter.
    A DIY nitrate media canister.
Two softball sizes of chaeto to sump with a 19watt 6500k light to sump.
Three snails and 10 red leg crabs.
    1 cleaner shrimp
    1 McCosker's flasher wrasse.
Changed out my magdrive7 return pump for a Rio 1700.

Here's a few pic's I snapped after doing a water change and some maint.

So, so. I lost alot of my stuff due to poor maint. and moving alittlt fast. I got a bad algae bloom and got tired of playing with it and the rest was down hill. I still have the tank up and my fish and shrimp are doing great, just not the corals. I'll probably start the rehab on it soon since now it has had time to mature.
